View Full Version : June Technique Challenge - LocoMOTION

Last month we did Selective Coloring to bring focus to a particular part of a picture. This month, let's use MOTION to center the focus! Yes, that wonderfully underused tool - BLUR - can change an ordinary picture into something worth keeping!

Case in point -
Here is a picture of my son at his PreK Graduation
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/Pamedalah/Blog/thumbsupQP.jpg

I love his happiness about the occasion, but the stuff going on around him is totally distracting. So, in this particular example, done in PSP8, I used a similar technique as last month. I duplicated the photo layer, motion blurred one layer, and then erased the top layer so only my son was in focus.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/Pamedalah/Blog/thumbsup2QP.jpg

Now with PSE5 it's soooo much easier!
Open your photo - use the MAGNETIC Lasso (your default is probably to polygonal; did you know there are 3 lassos to choose from?) and follow the outline of the item you want to keep still. Next - Select INVERSE - to select everything OTHER than your main item. Now go to the Filters-Blur-Motion Blur (or try any of them. I also like radial blur) and move the slider bar to increase or decrease the motion. Voila! You've changed the focus of your picture, quite literally!

Give this a try. I bet you find you can rescue some of those so-so photos!

I'm working on a challenge participation gift. I'll get a pic posted soon!

I had a go at this. I can't resist playing with photos.
I used motion blur on this but looking at it now I think it could have used a bit more blur, considering how fast the cars were going :)

It's a bit subtle, but I blurred the backgrounds in all 4 pics to emphasis me and the baby.

Okay, I have two of the same and I am in need of advise. Do you think the vines on the letters are nice or distracting? I thought I would love it and it took a bit, but now I'm not so sure:

Thanks for another great technique ~ I really enjoy learning all these new ways to play with photos. Here's mine, I am doing a two for one on this one, using the Apple Cart Challenge #1 kit with the blurred photos.

I did a before and an after, to show how it changed! (It's the top and biggest butterfly photo).

Here's the before: http://scraporchard.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5134&ppuser=1002

And here is the after: http://scraporchard.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5137&ppuser=1002

I actually combined the challenge from last month and this month! (Since I didn't get last months done!)

I did mine a little different
http://scraporchard.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5197&nocache=1
I have used that technique to do a pool party picture once - but this time - I actually created the movement by duplicating the layer and isolating just the arms and flags so I could show the next movement of her arms.

DD just out playing with her flag.
