Welcome to this month's Technique Challenge. Hopefully this will give you something new to think about in your scrappin'! If nothing else, I'm bound to learn something from all of YOU! :)

This month's Challenge is "Cherry Pickin" You know how you have some photos that you really want to focus in on just one aspect? Well that's where Selective Coloring comes in. Cherry Picking is choosing the creme de la creme, the best of the crop... so why not select the attribute you want to accent most?

There are several ways to do this... here is one.

Take your color photo - duplicate it, then turn off the visibility. Convert the visible one to black and white. Now place the Color layer BELOW the Black and White layer and simply ERASE where you want color to show through.

This is the simplest way to do this and works in PSP, PSE, PS, etc.

Here is a sample. My son's ToysRUs hat is giraffe orange, his shirt a bright blue and red stripe... all terribly busy! But I loved his expression and, of course, his baby blues!
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/Pamedalah/Blog/Nickbwsky.jpg

So I layered the B/W over the color and erased wherever his skin and hair were. All the busy-ness fades away and I end up with a photo that accents my child and not the cacaphony of color (and crapola!) in the original shot!

Here's the original... not so great scrappin' material, huh? LOL
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii283/Pamedalah/Blog/NIckbubbleslesson.jpg

So here's the Challenge - Show me YOUR Selective coloring in a layout and post it in the Challenge Gallery!

If you have other ideas on how to selective color - tell us! This challenge is about learning and inspiring each other to try something new!

I look forward to seeing your layouts!

What a fabulous challenge! I haven't tried this yet! I keep seeing wonderful layouts that use it but forget to actually try it out.

I just learned something new!!! I have of course taken the long way as per usual.
I use a gradient map with an adjustment layer and then 'brush' the colour back in, which takes quite a while. I'm definitely going to try this!

Wow, what an easy way to do this. I always go about it the hard way (which I can never remember and always have to ask DD). I'm up for the challenge if I can find a picture.

Jaye- That is an awesome photo! I love how you captured him mid-air!

jaye
05-03-2008, 12:59 PM
Thanks............wish I would have captured the 'after' photo, look on his face was priceless, his tummy was just a little red. Of course he went up and did it again :)

In case anyone is wondering that black blob in the photo is my friend's black lab standing in the shadow, couldn't lighten her up or figure out how to take her out either.

QueenPamedalah
05-03-2008, 02:10 PM
Great pages, ya'll!

And Jaye, as for your black lab blob... try the clone tool to continue the noodle and put water over the blob if it bothers you. I didn't even notice it until you pointed it out because your selective coloring zeros you in on the mid air ballet! :)

Here (http://scraporchard.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=3491) is my entry. Any CC is encouraged. I keep trying to add to it, but everything I try seems to make it look too cluttered. It seems to make a strong statement all on its own.
